  Walkabout (1971)

Walkabout (1971)

Adolescent Aborigine saves siblings.

Walkabout is a beautiful masterpiece directed and shot by Nicolas Roeg. It tells the story of a teenage girl and her little brother stranded in the Australian outback and how they are rescued by an Aboriginal boy.

The gorgeous setting and voyeuristic cinematography are complemented perfectly by a young & nubile Jenny Agutter, who stars as the girl. Jenny plays a naive, unworldly teen who suddenly finds herself and her little scamp of a brother, played by Nicolas' son, Luc Roeg, lost in the Aussie wasteland. They are forced to fend for themselves as they search desperately for civilization. They find help when they come across an Aboriginal teen, played by David Gulpilil, who is out on his own ritualistic trek known as a "walkabout."

Although the girl and the Aborigine are worlds apart, they find themselves in the same situation. They both have a desire to explore the unknown, to learn to exist on their own, and to find their place in the vast world. Take these elements and combine them with innocent performances, disturbing montages, quirky secondary plots, and a rousing musical score and you have a cult classic boosted by a 70's edge.
