  Dragonfly (2002)

Ominous journey, gratifying tale.

Review: Dragonfly is the second paranormal love story I've watched in a week and it's much better than White Noise. Kevin Costner stars as a doctor who loses his wife in an automotive accident.

A series of odd events proves to Costner that his wife is trying to contact him. He follows the clues and puts the pieces together to solve her puzzle. The final journey is perhaps a bit extra ordinary, but the ending is gratifying for what is, after all, a love story.

Tom Shadyac does an excellent job balancing the believable with the not-so-believable. Bizarre events are kept in check; this is made especially apparent when the final cut of a scene is compared to the different versions contained in the deleted scenes portion of the bonus material. The deleted scenes go further towards the paranormal and by demonstrating restraint, the filmmakers created a much better final product. Eerie mood, good pacing, and satisfying experience.

Geek Trivia: Costner's wife is played by Susanna Thompson, who also portrayed the Borg Queen in Star Trek: Voyager.
