Le Notti erotiche dei morti viventi (1980) (AKA Erotic Nights of the Living Dead)

Banging on zombie island.

Review: Zombies and hardcore sex? Count me in. Joe D'Amato does it again with Le Notti erotiche dei morti viventi, better known in the US as Erotic Nights of the Living Dead and Sexy Nights of the Living Dead. The story follows a businessman (Mark Shannon) that plans to build a resort on a remote island. Stories abound about the island as a place of evil and home of zombies. A sailor (George Eastman) takes the businessman and his girlfriend (Dirce Funari) to explore the island.

Laura Gemser stars as a mysterious native island girl. Best known as the Black Emanuelle, Gemser's character is no sexpot here so there isn't much to get excited about, although she is in the most memorable scene of the film.

The sexy star of the movie is the girlfriend, Funari. She's in several sultry softcore scenes and looks great sunbathing at the beach.

Unlike Immagini di un convento (1979) aka Images in a Convent, the actresses in Erotic Nights are not as attractive. They don't have the prettiest of faces or the firmest of bodies. In fact, several have excess fat and loose bottoms and thighs. Not exactly good porn material (and why I left them out of the screencaps).

But the most disturbing physical attribute belongs to Tom Selleck-lookalike, Mark Shannon, who plays the businessman. During an explicit threesome with two women, you can clearly see large wart-like bumps on the base of his scrotum. It's enough to make you vomit.

Just because Erotic Nights contains two of my favorite subjects, it doesn't mean it's a great movie. Far from it. All of the low-budget, Italian zombie flicks from the 70s & 80s that I've seen have problems. In this case, the zombies are downright boring. Their makeup is bland and they never present a feeling of impending doom. Save for the one scene where a man's penis is unceremoniously detached, the gore and violence is uninspired.

I'm not sure what to make of this movie. There isn't enough zombie action to make it a real zombie movie and there aren't enough attractive women in the sex scenes to make it a worthwhile porn flick. So it appears Erotic Nights will appeal only to diehard fans of Joe D'Amato and cult cinema.

Film Note: The DVD title is Erotic Nights of the Living Dead, but the opening credits state, Sexy Nights of the Living Dead.
