La Marche de l'empereur (2005) (AKA March of the Penguins)

The Emperors Hike Back.

Review: I probably don't have to say much about this movie because you must've heard all the praise and hoopla already. Well, what's one more glowing review...

Summed up simply, La Marche de l'empereur aka March of the Penguins is a documentary on the life of the Emperor penguins of Antarctica and their arduous, annual journey to find a mate and bear a newborn.

The emptiness and bleakness of the environment is brought home convincingly as is the harshness of the Antarctic continent. The wide landscape shots and aerial views are beautiful beyond words and the penguins are the cutest things on two feet (or is that flippers). Their waddle is perhaps the most entertaining movement of any creature.

I love the fact that the filmmakers did not pick out one pair of penguins to follow and instead focused on the entire group of penguins. Director Luc Jacquet brings us into the Emperor penguin's world allowing us to witness their struggles and achievements.

March of the Penguins is a wonderful movie that everyone should see.
