  The Ring Two (2005)

Story circles around again.

Review: I'm a bit torn about this one. I absolutely loved The Ring and was looking forward to this sequel despite the so-so reviews. The Ring Two has much the same plot as the original, but it doesn't possess the same intensity or creepiness.

The Ring was extremely well done and its story--even with the supernatural elements--stayed in the real world. Flashbacks were used brilliantly to progress the story. The Ring Two also uses flashbacks, but not to the same degree and effect. Two loses focus and any semblance of a logical plot when it meanders too much into nonsensical dream sequences that apparently are governed by the same rules as the ones set forth in A Nightmare On Elm Street.

To top if off, the ending was disappointing. Once again, it relied on a dream sequence to explain and resolve the story. How Samara's reign of terror was cleared up so easily was upsetting and utterly dissatisfying.

On a positive note, Two does reveal more details about Samara's past and the reasons for her continued existence. Naomi Watts also puts in a strong performance, but the final product (Rated or Unrated) is not up to the same standard set by the original. Recommended if you want to learn more of the mythology, but not if you want to be scared.
