  Twelve Monkeys (1995)

Monkeying around with time.

Review: I watched Twelve Monkeys for the umpteenth time yesterday and just watched the 'making of' feature today. The film is as enjoyable as ever. It just doesn't get much better than this. In this latest viewing I gained a better appreciation of how well the flashbacks and foreshadowing were done. They are used so effectively to build suspense and construct the complex puzzle of a plot. On the same note, I really get a sense of how important editing is. Kudos to Mick Audsley.

The newly released Special Edition DVD (Universal 25452) contains an audio commentary track by director Terry Gilliam and producer Chuck Roven, "The Hamster Factor and Other Tales of Twelve Monkeys" documentary, and storyboards and production stills. "The Hamster Factor..." was a huge surprise. It clocks in at around 1.5 hours and accordingly provides a ton of detail and insight into Terry Gilliam and the whole filmmaking process. I never knew the boy that played Young Cole was the second choice after the first boy cast for the role couldn't pull off an excited & fascinated expression when passing through an airport metal detector. Fans will love this documentary as much as the film itself.
